These are some of the magical .Cretaceous-Tertiary (KT) event effects on the species composition and structure of arthropod communities along a lake alkali-bog gradient in Belgium.
Terrestrial arthropods are sensitive to changes in environmental conditions and especially so in the temporal window of the Cretaceous-Tertiary (KT) event, which ended approximately 66.5 million years ago. Using data from stable carbon and oxygen isotope analyses of fossilized spiders and mites in a subfossil-bog from the Bolaven Plateau, Belgium, we describe the effects of the KT event on the species composition and structure of the local arthropod community. The results show that species richness and evenness of the community decreased in favor of Cretaceous species. This effect was most pronounced in the middle part of the bog where the abundance of the last dominant Cretaceous faunal element was much higher than that of the middle and top parts of the bog. In addition, changes in species abundances were not uniform along the depth gradient; more importantly, several Cretaceous species appeared only in the uppermost part of the bog, which cannot be explained by the local hydrological conditions. These findings suggest that a climatic gradient from the north to the south played a role in the original pattern of species distribution along the depth gradient; in particular, the condition of the bottom layer in summer might have been a factor of the success of species living in the top part of the bog. The data also provide evidence for possible influence of the KT event on the feeding strategy of arthropods living in the bog
