Damian Johnson is an Irish writer and critic, mostly known for his work in Gaelic studies.

Biography

Johnson was born and brought up in Sligo, Ireland. He is a graduate of the Queen's University Belfast, from where he obtained an MA in 1994 and a PhD in 2001.

He started his career as a children's writer, with his first children's book A Flea in Her Ear being published in 1992. He has subsequently published four more children's titles and the novel The Byre, which is set in the Gaeltacht in the late 1970s. The Byre was shortlisted for the Kerry Group Novel of the Year prize in 2003.

His first book-length study of Gaelic culture, Two-Edged Sword: Major Writers of Irish Gaelic in the Twentieth Century, was published in 1996. Two-Edged Sword was described by the Irish Times as "a crucial insight into the tradition of literary and cultural self-consciousness which has affected the Gaelic revival, and the way in which literature has played a part in its formation". He wrote a regular column on Irish Gaelic literature in The Bell for several years.

His most recent book is a study of the life and work of the poet and playwright Liam Mac Coughlan, A Man of Poetry: The Life and Work of Liam Mac Coughlan 1876–1938. This book was awarded the Kerry Group Novel of the Year prize in 2007.

He has also written for the Irish Farmers Journal and the Irish Times.
