COVINGTON — Parks Police in a city where crowds reach record levels can cut back on manning the wheel, but that hasn’t happened yet, said Police Chief Paul Little.

“We still have to take the resources that we have out there to ensure public safety and deal with people breaking the rules and stuff like that,” he said. “That has not changed.”

The department has one road captain and two field supervisors, and Little said the department is in no danger of cutting any of those jobs, which he expects will remain a part of the city’s budget.

“We’re still looking for a funding mechanism to keep them in the budget,” he said. “We haven’t found that yet.”

Little said the department’s biggest challenge right now is a reduction in revenue from movie companies, which has led to a reduction in money from movie rentals. However, film production is not expected to dip any further, he said.

Covington’s population has increased by about 20 percent in the last few years, he said, and now the city sees a larger presence of families and parents with children. That has meant more recreational time and more money spent on parks.

“We’re going to be OK,” Little said. “We’ll be OK for now.”

Despite the economic challenges, he said the department has been doing well, and he expects it to continue to do so.

“We’ve had a solid budget,” he said.

The city’s parks department also has a newly hired parks director.

“We’ve never had one before,” Little said. “That’s going to be interesting.”
