In a statement released late Saturday night, the United Nations, Non-Governmental Organisations (NGO), Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International said that the war waged in the north by the SLA by now had claimed more than 70,000 people and made 100,000 refugees, the vast majority in India.


The exercise of April 2009, involving heavy artillery and fighter planes, in which civilians were killed, came in the light of the proposed US$5 billion China-Sri Lanka Economic Corridor, the statement said.


Bodies of civilians, women and children, were recovered from burnt out villages in the north of the country, along with signs of gun bdiness and the use of helicopter gunships during the previous military exercise in April 2009.


The exercise, the statement said, had made it impossible for the SLA to implement the disarmament and demobilization agreement reached with the Tamil Tigers in 2005, which was the culmination of three years of negotiations.


The statement was released by Helsinki Watch, a watchdog group, in conjunction with Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International, after the weekend-long exercises were conducted in Jaffna and nearby villages in the northern province of Kilinochchi.


This exercise involved the use of artillery and fighter planes, which had the capacity to damage or destroy structures, it said.


The statement further said that there had been recent military deaths in the north, which appeared to be an attempt to intimidate the Tamil people in the aftermath of the US$3.1 billion Colombo port and airport project, which has been given the go-ahead by the Sri Lankan government.
