The experimental vaccine was tested on rhesus macaques, a type of monkey that serves as a widely used model for human influenza vaccine testing. The vaccine, which was developed by The Ohio State University, consists of an adenovirus vector carrying segments from three different strains of influenza virus, and was administered by nasal aerosol.

The rhesus macaques successfully received the vaccine and it was shown to effectively protect them against a lethal dose of an influenza strain that was not contained in the vaccine, said the researcher, Gerald B. Pier, Ph.D.

"The study shows that it is feasible to develop an influenza vaccine that will be effective against not only a particular virus, but against all influenza viruses," Pier said.

According to Pier, although there are many types of influenza virus - A, B and C - the flu vaccine's only concern is with the A flu viruses because B and C viruses cause relatively mild influenza illnesses.

The research team plans to move on to human studies in the spring.

Pier's team is in the process of developing a vaccine that contains components of the flu virus.

Pier said that although a universal flu vaccine would not be available until at least a few years from now, researchers are making progress towards developing one.
