Intestinal lesions were induced in rats by 3 consecutive daily oral administrations of fusaric acid at a dose of 800 or 1000 mg/kg body weight. The lesions were characterized by hemorrhagic and ulcerative changes in the mucosa and submucosa in the small intestine. Histologically, the epithelial injury was characterized by infiltration of neutrophils and macrophages. Cell death was most extensive in the villous epithelium. Villous atrophy, crypt hyperplasia, and fibrosis were also observed. The changes in the mucosa were accompanied by increasing concentrations of lipid peroxide (LPO) in the proximal and distal small intestine mucosa from 1 to 3 days after fusaric acid administration. The decrease in the activity of glutathione peroxidase was observed from 3 to 7 days after fusaric acid treatment. Our data suggest that the LPO-mediated mechanism may contribute to the development of gastrointestinal lesions induced in rats by fusaric acid.Molecular forms of the beta-adrenergic receptor of fetal rat lung and expression of adenylyl cyclase and phosphodiesterase genes.
