How does Tik Tok algorithm work?

TikTok has become one of the most used social networks of the moment. Thousands of users spend hours on TikTok and the vast majority ask themselves more than once… How to get more visibility on this social network? Well, The secret to being successful on TikTok is to understand the workings of the system and approach it with proven strategies.

1, For You Page

Everyone’s For You Page is completely different, TikTok’s algorithm uses machine learning to determine what content a user is most likely to engage with and serve them more of it, by finding videos that are similar or that are liked by people with similar user preferences. There are a number of factors that influence what you see on the For You Page, such as:

  • Level of engagement such as likes and comments within a specific timeframe
  • The number of people that share the video in 24 hours.
  • Full video views
  • Video rewatches
  • The hashtag used for the video
  • The number of followers that is gained from the video within the first 24 hours

2, Jump on Current Trends

TikTok is an ever-changing platform, with trends coming and going within weeks. If you want to increase your visibility and crack the algorithm, make sure to jump on these trends from time to time. You can do this by browsing through the Discover section on TikTok, and look for the most popular hashtags and challenges. Find a hashtag or challenge that fits your personal brand, and give it a go.

In addition, you can also look for songs or sounds that are trending. You can find these in your video editor. Or have a look at sounds your viewers have listened to, which you can find in your account analytics. This data will give you an idea of which songs to try.

3, Hashtags

You can use #fyp, #foryou and #foryoupage – but you should also look at what other hashtags are trending. Tap the discover button on the bottom of your app and it’ll show you trending ones there. You can also start typing in a hashtag in the search bar, press enter and the navigate over to “Hashtags” to see what pops up.

4, Follower Activity

This one may seem obvious, but you should be trying to post your content at a time when your followers are most active. While TiKTok’s analytics may not be as in-depth as some other social media platforms, a TikTok Pro account offers a bunch of valuable analytics and insights into how your followers interact with your content and the platform.

With this in mind you can have a checklist once you create a video (or even create an account) on how you’re going to pass the different stages. If you’re looking to maximise your full potential on social media, develop your brand’s digital personality or champion your industry with unique, creative and strategically devised content contact us to get started on your digital journey.
